Target Screwed Up — Big Time

Target, or as my family affectionately calls it, “Targée” (said with a French accent to indicate its quality products over Walmart), used to be one of the few big-box stores that didn’t feel like it was run by total idiots. It had a loyal customer base, stores that felt cleaner and friendlier than Walmart, and a brand that made people feel good about shopping there. I really love going to Target, even just to browse, and I always end up buying something. But now? Target is burning itself to the ground.

In March 2024, Maine Governor Janet Mills said something that should have made the company’s executives stop and think: “If Trump tries to weaponize federal funds against our state, maybe we’ll stop paying his taxes.” Okay, so there are many legal issues with her actually doing such action, and I wrote about it in another blog. But, she was talking about how corporations and states need to push back against authoritarianism, not bow down to it.

But instead of standing strong, Target joined the “kill DEI” bandwagon, cutting diversity programs that helped women, Black and brown businesses, LGBTQ+ employees, and others who have historically been locked out of leadership. And now…
