Most Americans have never seen their democracy fall. Exceptionalism has brainwashed us to think that this kind of instability only happens in other less civilized countries–”Banana Republics” or poor African countries with mad, greedy dictators who care nothing about their people. We tell ourselves, “This is not who we are!” We believe that only the Russian communists and ‘Arab’ Muslims have such instability. We are, after all, a God-fearing nation.” That’s the problem.
In history books and even today’s press, dictatorships sound like something that happened somewhere else — Germany during Hitler, Russia with Putin, Turkey with Erderon, Venezuela with Maduro. Many don’t recognize the signs in real time because they assume, “It could never happen here. We have the best governmental checks and balances of any nation.”
