I will try my best to avoid spoilers.

My first recommendation is “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian author. I had to read this book for literature in high school, and it was life-changing. I read it again recently as an adult, and it’s still a great classic. It is a seminal piece of literature that provides a deep, nuanced exploration of the clash between traditional Igbo society in Nigeria and the onset of colonialism in the late 19th century.

The story centers around Okonkwo, a respected and influential leader in the Umuofia clan, whose life is marked by his struggle against the perceived weakness he sees within himself, inherited from his father. Achebe masterfully uses Okonkwo’s personal journey to critique the broader social and political upheavals brought about by European colonialism and its impact on African societies.
